Past Perfect Future Tense lays bare the stigmatic paradox of aging. Through an array featuring vintage quilts, woven and riveted bra straps, antique vanity trays, brass badges of blue-haired honor, and redressed canvas punching bags (the literal “old bags” at the center of this show), Martz illustrates a war of acceptance waged through the bombardment of brutal, if commonplace, propaganda. Aging, particularly for women, invites an onslaught of expectation, its messaging found concealed in Martz’s intricate beadwork. Women of a certain age, represented here by frayed and faded textile, are dismissed, disregarded, targeted, censored, and otherwise adorned with demeaning labels like crone or hag. But in ultimately committing the unavoidable transgression of aging, women may discover the power of invisibility and the pleasure of moving outside of the attention of society’s obsessive, opinionated onlookers.
